You eat WHAT for Thanksgiving?
My fondest memories of Thanksgiving include sitting on a bench at the end of our long table with my favorite human (who also happens to be my cousin), Carolyn. We’d get ourselves separate bowls just for our jello mold and try to convince our parents to make an extra jello mold just for us. Usually we’d be dressed up in some nice outfit which we’d try to change out of as soon as possible. And while the parents were cooking or engaging in conversation, we’d be causing some sort of trouble whether it be throwing barbies in the road to watch cars run them over or escaping past the fence into the backyards of neighbors. And how could I forget the bag I would always pack with clothes and whatever else I’d need so I would be ready to have a sleep over should our parents agree.
On the table would be special place cards with our names on it. The fancy plates were always set up so nicely. And when we were all sitting down someone would say grace and we’d pass each dish clockwise around the table.
My favorite thanksgiving food is without a doubt the stuffing, but we would always have turkey, mashed potatoes, and corn bread casserole too. Other sides included sweet potato casserole, pineapple casserole, and green bean casserole.
For dessert it would be a different combination of pies, usually pumpkin and pecan pie. The jello mold would always be served with dinner, but I’d say it was most certainly a dessert.
But before dinner would even start, I’d be eating half the bowl of olives that was on the dinner table. We’d have brie puff pastry that never seemed to last very long either. When you ask any of my family members how they remember me at family holidays, they’ll tell you I just sat at the appetizer table. That’s still probably true now.
Some of my greatest memories include getting together with my family for Thanksgiving.
I don’t think we’ll ever have a Thanksgiving like we did in 1999 again, but I hope when my kids are grown they’ll look back at their Thanksgivings and have fond memories.
A big shout out and thank you to my lovely Aunt Betsy for putting together a recipe book of all our favorite family recipes. It will be treasured for years to come!
